ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Cliff Keen Wrestling Club is proud to announce the addition of former Oklahoma State All-American Jon Morrison to its 2017-18 senior-level freestyle roster. Morrison, who returns to competition after a brief hiatus, will likely wrestle at the anticipated 60kg/132-pound new weight class.
“I’m thrilled for Jon that he has decided to train and compete again,” said CKWC coach Sean Bormet. “He had a lot of choices once he made that decision, and I could not be more excited that he chose Michigan and the Cliff Keen WC. I started mentoring and coaching Jon at my club in Illinois when he was 11 years old and then all the way through high school. We have always maintained a strong relationship, and I’m excited for the opportunity to coach him again. Jon is extremely talented and a tremendous technician. He will be a great contributor to our wrestling room. I believe in him and his ability to make teams and win medals on the world stage.”
A collegiate standout at Oklahoma State (2011-14), Morrison was an NCAA All-American at 133 pounds, claiming fifth place as a junior (2013), and a four-time NCAA qualifier. After missing the 2011 tournament due to injury, he contributed to top-10 team finishes for Oklahoma State in each of his final three NCAA appearances, including a runner-up finish in 2013 and third-place showing in 2014.
Morrison was also a two-time Big Ten 12 conference champion (2013, ’14) and two-time Southern Scuffle champion (2013, ’14) and compiled a 105-30 career record, including a 57-11 mark over his final two seasons at 133 pounds.
Originally from Orland Park, Illinois, Morrison was a state champion and three-time state finalist at Carl Sandburg HS as well as a Fargo junior freestyle national champion and three-time Fargo finalist. He was also a University Nationals freestyle finalist (2010) and, most recently, claimed fourth place at the 2015 U.S. World Team Trials and fifth at the U.S. Open at 61kg/134 pounds.
Morrison served as an assistant coach at St. Paul’s School in Baltimore, Maryland, during the 2016-17 academic year. He will relocate to Ann Arbor later this month.
