ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan graduate Myles Amine will remain at his alma mater to continue his international wrestling career with the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club, the club announced Monday (July 18). Amine, who completed his collegiate career as the first ever five-time NCAA All-American last spring, is already an Olympic bronze medalist and four-time European medalist for San Marino.
“Myles has had several opportunities presented to him from other RTCs since March,” said Michigan head coach Sean Bormet, “and we are thrilled he chose to continue to make Michigan his home to train and compete with our CKWC. He is incredibly special to our coaching staff, to Michigan wrestling, our student-athletes and alumni. He is a world-class wrestler and person, and we look forward to supporting him in every way as he now transitions to freestyle wrestling full time.”
“After long and careful consideration, I am thrilled to announce I will be continuing my senior-level career in Ann Arbor,” said Amine. “CKWC was a big part of my success in Tokyo and I feel confident that Sergei [Beloglazov] and the rest of the staff will help me accomplish my Olympic dreams in Paris.”
Amine has established himself as one of the best freestyle wrestlers in the world over the last several years. He used a late takedown to secure a 4-2 win over India’s Deepak Punia in the Olympic bronze-medal match in Tokyo and become the first freestyle Olympic medalist in Michigan wrestling history. He is a four-time European medalist, most recently capturing his first international gold medal in March with a 9-5 win over Azerbaijan’s Abubakr Abakarov, and followed that performance with another gold at the Mediterranean Games last month, defeating Turkey’s Fatih Erdin, 4-1, in the final.
Amine qualified for the Olympics with a fifth-place finish at the 2019 World Championships — his only appearance at the world event to date — and claimed silver at the Euro 2020 championships and bronze at the 2021 championships and 2019 games. He is San Marino’s first Olympic representative in wrestling and the country’s European medalist and champion.
As a collegiate wrestler (2017-19, 21-22), Amine is five-time All-American and the first ever five-time placewinner in NCAA Championships history. He never finished lower than fourth place across three different weight classes — 174, 184 and 197 pounds — and most recently took second place at 184 pounds last March. He captured Big Ten titles at 184 and 197 pounds in his career and earned Co-Wrestler of the Championship honors in 2022 when he all but clinched Michigan’s team title with a 6-4 comeback win in overtime in the 184-pound final. His 125-23 career record ranks him 13th among Michigan’s all-time winningest wrestlers.
He is next slated to compete at the World Championships in September in Belgrade, Serbia.
