CITY OF SAN MARINO, San Marino — University of Michigan senior Myles Amine was named San Marino’s 2019 Athlete of the Year as part of the country’s 60th anniversary event celebrating the founding of its Olympic Committee over the weekend.
Amine became the first Sammarinese wrestler to qualify for the Olympic Games when he claimed fifth place at 86kg/189 pounds at the 2019 World Championships last September and, before that, earned San Marino its first ever European medal with his bronze-medal performance at the European Games in June.
Amine made his senior-level debut in 2019, and in his first three tournament appearances — the European Championships, European Games and World Championships — he faced a world and/or Euro medalist in 11 of 13 matches, going 6-5 in those bouts. He also defeated the Pan-Am Games champ.
Malik Amine also made San Marino wrestling history in 2019, earning the country its first win at the World Championships with a wild 14-11 decision over Guinea Biseau’s Mbunde Cumba Mbal in the first round at 65kg/143 pounds.
